I had never heard of them until I moved here.  For me, a Bay is near the coast - certainly not in Aiken County!  Well, I was mistaken.  There are LOTS OF BAYS in South and North Carolina.    They are very mysterious actually.  Called a 'Carolina Bay'.  Elliptical depressions in the ground mainly found in The Carolinas.  AND THEY ARE PRESERVED WETLANDS!!! YAYYYY!! 

 Preserved and PROTECTED from development.         Some people might think that is a silly thing for a Realtor to be happy about - but come on - they aren't making anymore land....and we cannot develop every last square inch!   We have to have preserved space -  green space, wetlands, natural areas......  

         

The Carolina Bay in Aiken is located on Price Avenue - - across the street from Virginia Acres / Odell Weeks Park.  (Price Ave is  off Whiskey Road across from Honey Baked Ham)     There is a walking trail around the bay.  Take a stroll among nature :)       If you want to walk for exercise- when you are done walking around the bay you can go across the street and power walk the track around the park!  One lap = one mile :)   Walk with a friend and before you know it you have walked several miles!

The 20^th Annual St. Mary's Chocolate Festivalwas today and it was a blast  : )

I hope you got a chance to stop by.      

So much to see and do -  

The frozen casserole sale was a complete success and completely sold out in the first hour!    Silly me - I headed straight for the chocolate...and by the time I got to the casseroles they were all gone  : (

 Silent auction- there were so many cool items on which to bid.  Artwork, chocolate baskets, rounds of golf, spa day for two, dinner/theatre combo, pet baskets, gardening gifts, jewelry, three days/two nights in Hilton Head, Football tickets!!, so much more and... parties-parties-parties!!  Yes - you didn't have to bid - just sign up and pay the per person amt.  Such as: and oyster roast to be held on Feb 21 at the Mickey Anaclerio residence.  Last year this party raised a ton of money for the school.  Oh, and Mickey is my landlord :)          There were other parties too.   Japanese Dinner, Girls Night Out...... 

 

The new/used book sale  - lots and lots of books to choose from - CHEAP!! And then even cheaper at the end of the day.  (down to $1/bag!!) 

Bake Sale- it was hard to make a choice - everything looked soooo good.     I work for the most recognizable agent in Aiken...therefore I get recognized by lots of people too.  (recognition by association, lol)     I asked one of the volunteers at the bake sale if there were any ‘buckeyes'..and she said - 'no, Kara, I'm sorry  - Jane Page was just here and asked the same thing!'    I must have had a blank look on my face -  and as I started to speak she said ‘it's me---Roseanne from The Real Estate Book'     OMG - of course!  I just didn't recognize her in that bakers apron!  And to be honest...I was paying more attention to all the chocolate delights, hehehe.    

             

Food of course - burgers/hot dogs/fries/ice cream/choc cakes and pies by the slice/cookies/brownies......!  -  and face painting - carriage rides and more!

                                                                                                                

Rides and games for the kids - a blood drive - pet adoption - plant sale -  A pudding toss --- this was too funny! 

         

Even a mechanical bull----or was it a chocolate moose?   Oh - no no no - Chocolate Moose was the band - and they were actually pretty good!   TAKE A LOOK!! 

 Irish  Dancers put on a show too - these kids have practiced A LOT!!  Check it out!

I attended a match last weekend - and am looking forward to another match on Sunday.   There was a finals today at Whitney Field---and Duck Hill took it over Storm Branch.  According to my source it was a total annihilation!   Congrats to the Duck Hill team.

Did you know that Aiken SC is a City of Character?   (and some charactors too, lol) j/k.

"OUR CITY WILL BE JUDGED BY THE CHARACTER OF OUR CITIZENS"

Anyway - back in 1999 a resolution was passed by the Aiken City Council to support a 'Community of Charactor' initiative in Aiken - THE FIRST IN SOUTH CAROLINA!!   We really are trend setters here in this little horse town :)

                                                      

What does this mean?   Well, each month a character trait is presented to the community to encourage citizens OF ALL AGES to become better role models of good character.  AND..every year the 'Celebration of Character' awards ceremony (sponsored by the women's clubs) is held to acknowledge students who display POSITIVE character in the way they conduct their lives.

Local schools, businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, Aiken area women's clubs, the media and City Government are ALL involved in encouraging GOOD CHARACTER among Aiken's citizens!

Why promote good character?  (OMG do you even have to ask!!!)

•    to help develop strong families
•    to develop strong friendships
•    add POSITIVE QUALITIES to the lives of our young people
•    add POSITIVE QUALITIES to the lives of our adult citizens, too!

The Fairgrounds are located on Highway 1  - approx 6 miles north of Downtown Aiken.  (I'm not great with distance - - - but the fairgrounds are not far from town.)   Just look for the Ferris Wheel!
