Their positions are 1-2-3-4 but 2 is a 4 sometimes, too.

Didn't want y'all to miss this post in our Polo 101 series!   Enjoy.

Via Gene Mock:

Aiken polo season will be here before we know it! I hope you are enjoying the series we have put together to get you ready.   We have covered a lot of ground so far :)

Let's talk about the players for a minute.

There are four players on a team.

Each player has a position – designated by the number on his/her jersey. 1-2-3-4. Usually, (but not always!) the most experienced and highest rated players are at positions 2 and 3.

The positions are flexible, and each player is prepared to make any play that benefits the team, changing position as necessary. It was a little complicated for me to try to explain the different positions, so I borrowed these descriptions from answers.com. I hope they don’t mind. I did add the football references to their descriptions, lol.

Position #1 is the most offensive position on the field. The number one position generally covers the opposing team's number four.

Position #2 is the most difficult position on the field to play. The number two has an important offensive role of either running through and scoring himself, or passing to the number one and getting in behind him. Defensively he will cover the opposing team's number three--generally the other team's best player. Given the difficulty of this position, it is not uncommon for the best player on the team to play number two so long as another strong player is available to play three.

Position #3 is the tactical leader (quarterback!) and must be a long powerful hitter to feed balls to Number Two and Number One as well as maintaining a solid defense. The best player on the team is usually the Number Three player.

Position #4 is the primary defense player (similar to a back in football) and though he can move anywhere on the field, he often tries to prevent scoring. The excessive defense of the number four allows the number three to commit to more offensive plays knowing he will be covered if he loses the ball. Thanks again to answers.com for the player position explanation. Watch for more posts in this series.
